You know what the equipment will do for your business. You have steady customer demand, strong revenue and healthy receivables. So you request financing for a machine that fits the work ahead.
Then the approval comes back well below what you asked for. Maybe it covers only part of the purchase. Or the amount is approved, but the equipment you need is still out of reach.
It is reasonable to think, “Our revenue supports this.” Often, that is true. But revenue alone does not determine the amount a financing source approves.
Revenue matters, but it is only one part of the picture
Revenue shows that your business brings in money. The financing source also considers how much cash is available after operating expenses and existing obligations, and whether the proposed financing fits its own policies and limits.
The specific equipment matters, too. A machine with a clear resale market may be evaluated differently from specialized equipment that could be harder to value or sell. The source may also consider how much financing it already has with your business, or with businesses in the same industry or equipment category.
In other words, a strong sales number does not automatically set the approval amount. The request is considered alongside the business’s obligations, the equipment being financed, and the financing source’s own exposure limits, concentration limits and program rules.
Each financing source underwrites the request and makes its own credit decision. As an independent commercial finance company, Simplified Capital works with a range of financing sources rather than making credit decisions itself.
Sometimes it is about the business. Sometimes it is about the source.
There are cases where a smaller approval reflects real factors in the business’s financial picture. A newer business may have a shorter record to review. A limited banking history or substantial existing obligations may affect what the business can comfortably take on. And equipment that is difficult to value can limit how much a source is willing to finance against it.
There are also cases where the business is financially sound, but the request exceeds a particular source’s limits. That might reflect how much exposure it is willing to have with one customer, its appetite for a particular industry, or the parameters of the program being considered.
Neither explanation should be assumed without asking. A smaller approval is useful information, but it is not automatically a final verdict on your business or the equipment purchase.
What to do when the approval falls short
Start by asking what drove the amount. Was it the business’s financial picture, the equipment, existing obligations, or a limit specific to that financing source? A clear answer can help you decide what, if anything, to change.
If more information could help explain the business’s position, ask what documentation would be useful. If the constraint is tied to the equipment or the size of the request, consider whether a different equipment mix or a phased purchase would make sense. A structure that better fits the transaction may be worth exploring.
Different financing sources have different credit guidelines, industry preferences and transaction limits. An approval that falls short with one source may qualify for consideration under another financing program.
This is where Simplified Capital can make a difference. Since 2002, we've helped business owners navigate commercial financing through our established relationships with multiple financing sources. Rather than starting over and approaching lenders individually, contact Simplified Capital. We can review your transaction, identify potential financing alternatives and help you pursue a structure suited to your equipment purchase and business needs.
If an approval covers part of the purchase, it may still be worth considering. Partial financing could let you preserve some of your cash while putting the equipment to work, rather than waiting until you have accumulated the full purchase amount. Compare the cost and terms with the business benefit before deciding.
A Smaller Approval Does Not Have to End the Conversation
A financing approval that falls short of your equipment purchase doesn't necessarily mean the transaction is out of reach. It may mean the financing structure or source isn't the right fit.
Simplified Capital has been helping business owners secure commercial financing since 2002. Our experience and established financing relationships allow us to evaluate transactions from different perspectives and pursue financing solutions suited to each customer's circumstances.
If you've received an approval that falls short of your needs, we welcome the opportunity to review your transaction and explore whether another financing program or structure may better accommodate your equipment purchase.
Before you reduce your equipment purchase, commit additional cash or walk away from an opportunity, give Simplified Capital a call.
Whether you're purchasing equipment, expanding operations or have already received an approval that doesn't meet your needs, we'd welcome the opportunity to review your financing request.
