A dealership sales manager and financing representative reviewing a transaction at a desk, with unbranded commercial trucks visible through the showroom window

A customer has found the equipment they want. The sale is close, and the customer appears qualified. But you already know there may be a problem: the used truck is older than your financing program typically accepts, or the transaction is larger than its usual limit.

That does not automatically mean the customer must choose different equipment or that the sale is over. It means the transaction may not fit your current program.

For dealers, manufacturers, vendors, and distributors, recognizing that distinction early can help preserve options. Instead of trying to force a transaction into a program that was not designed for it, you can identify what falls outside the guidelines and consider whether another financing source may be appropriate.

What “outside the program” can look like

Financing programs have boundaries. Those boundaries differ by source and may relate to the equipment, the transaction, or the customer’s overall profile.

Equipment age: A program may set age or model-year guidelines. Older used equipment can fall outside them even when it is in good condition and is exactly what the customer needs. Another financing source may assess that equipment differently, taking a different view of its age, condition, or marketability.

Transaction size: Programs may have minimum or maximum transaction sizes. A deal that is too small or too large for one program may not fit its process, even if the customer is financially strong and the purchase makes sense.

Collateral requirements: Not every program is designed for every equipment type or collateral profile. The asset’s configuration, condition, resale market, or the way it is being purchased may affect whether it meets a source’s guidelines.

Other program limits: Credit policies, industry guidelines, documentation requirements, and transaction structure can also matter. For example, a larger transaction may require more detailed financial information than a program typically requests for routine purchases.

These are program boundaries, not automatic judgments about the customer or the equipment. Financing sources make their own underwriting and credit decisions, and another source may view the same transaction differently.

Identify the mismatch before changing the sale

When you can see that a transaction may sit outside your usual program, start by pinpointing the specific issue. Is it the equipment’s age? The size of the transaction? The type of collateral? A documentation or policy requirement?

Knowing the mismatch helps you have a practical conversation with the customer and assess what options may be worth exploring. It can also help you avoid making unnecessary changes to a sale before you know whether another financing route is available.

Next, assemble the basic facts about the transaction. Useful details may include:

  • Equipment description, age, and condition
  • Purchase price and total transaction amount
  • Customer’s business and financing profile
  • Any relevant information about how the equipment will be used

A clear picture of the equipment and transaction makes it easier to determine whether another financing source may consider the opportunity. If the customer is open to it, explore that possibility before abandoning the sale or asking them to settle for equipment that does not meet their needs.

An additional resource for out-of-program transactions

Simplified Capital is an independent commercial finance company that works with multiple financing sources. We can serve as an additional resource when a transaction falls outside a dealer’s primary program, while the dealer’s customer remains the dealer’s customer.

Depending on the financing source, prequalification or conditional approval may be available. Any such review remains subject to evaluation of the specific equipment, seller, and final transaction. An initial review or prequalification is not completed funding.

Our role is to discuss the transaction and help determine whether another financing source may be appropriate. If you are exploring options for a customer, you can learn more about our Equipment Financing options.

Keep the opportunity and the customer relationship

When a transaction does not fit one program, an additional financing resource may help keep the sale under consideration without asking the customer to give up on the equipment they want. A dealer who can say, “We have another option to explore,” can maintain momentum and continue serving the customer.

And when a vendor encounters this kind of mismatch more than once, a reliable additional resource can become useful for future out-of-program transactions too.

If you have a customer transaction that does not fit your existing financing program, send us the details to explore whether another financing source may consider it. Call (866) 810-1305, email info@simplifiedcapital.com, or fill out our contact form.
